Lutron Places Portal
The Places portal is a cloud-based file management system for dealers and lighting designers. Places helps users to keep track of the projects they are working on including files shared with them and version history.
This portal is designed to be an entry space for users to navigate through different Lutron programs based on where they are in the commissioning process. I was assigned as the Lead UI Designer on this project.
My Role
From Spring 2022 - Winter 2022 I was the Lead UI Designer on this project. I worked closely with the Interaction Designer and development team to create an intuitive platform that allowed users to manage their files effectively.
Places Requirements
The primary purpose of Places is to create a dedicated cloud space for lighting dealers and designers to manage multiple projects. Through user interviews and tests, we learned the importance of being able to view all projects at a high level, share projects with teammates and quick access to version history.
Because Places would be integrated with other programs, there was a need to design Places in light and dark mode.
Version History
Lighting dealers need to be able to refer back to older versions of files to trouble-shoot and understand changes made. Through user testing and interviews, we learned that most lighting dealers will take notes of changes made within a file. They also confirmed that they will save and resave files multiple times throughout the day so not every version needs notes. Additionally, being able to mark specific files based on different actions is very helpful.
Prioritizing Versions
I wanted to create a visual hierarchy for key versions of files- Current, Last Converted, Last Activated and Last Transferred.
While most versions follow a similar table layout as the landing page, I designed larger cards for these versions and placed them at the top of the screen.
Sharing
Lighting dealers need to be able to share project files with team members but also choose which team members they are sharing with. This informed our decision to create a form field that allows users to input a specific email and designate access type and duration. Due to the nature of the work, it was important that users with Admin access are also able to revoke or modify a person's access at any point.
More than one way to share
During user interviews we learned that a lot of our dealers currently share projects via dropbox or similar avenues. So I designed an option to share projects via link.
Because of security concerns, I needed to incorporate the ability to generate a new link - effectively breaking the old link. However, stakeholders also asked that this feature is subtle as to not encourage too much link generation.
